In an effort to reduce the amount
of electricity and water that we consume we have put in place practices
that help reduce our total energy and water consumption. It is a small
step but one we feel is in the right direction. Hopefully other companies
will see the need in conservation and will also work towards a better
tomorrow for all our children.
Some of our Conservation Efforts:
We are currently working with our suppliers to use
Green products in the production, storage, packaging and shipping
of our products wherever possible. From unbleached parchment paper
to 40% post consumed recycled shipping boxes. As more companies produce
products that are Green we will continue to implement and use them
where possible.
Currently some of our customers require that we use
poly Styrofoam packing peanuts. We are working with them to try and
change to recycled green packing peanuts in the meantime we are internally
recycling the bags that the peanuts are shipped in as trash can liners.
It is a small step towards trying to offset the use of the peanuts.
At the present time we have suspended our production
and mailing of product magazines. In doing so we have reduced our
paper consumption, energy use and fuel usage in the production and
distribution of our magazines. Our entire product line can be viewed
online on our company website and if you ever have a question you
can contact us via email or phone and we will be happy to assist you
with your order.
We are always working to streamline our operations
conservation of paper and printing. We encourage our employees to
only print emails when necessary and to use Adobe® PDF files whenever
possible. This helps to significantly reduce the amount of paper waste.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Americans generated
about 83 million tons of paper products in the municipal solid waste
stream in 2003, nearly a three-fold increase from 1960.
Finally, we strived and pride ourselves in using raw
ingredients that are manufactured in the United States. In doing this
we not only create all American Desserts with all American products
but help reduce the amount of CO2 and extra packaging that is created
by importing products from overseas. Also, it is good to know that
your homeland can produce products that nor only rival those of foreign
countries but surpass them in quality, taste and craftsmanship. We
support and encourage Made in the USA!
We currently use only half of the total amount of
each florescent lighting fixture total output wherever possible. This
helps in reducing the total amount of electricity used by each fixture
by almost 50% without compromising safety. All walk-in coolers and
freezers use Compact florescent bulbs (CFLs) instead of incandescent
bulbs; they use about a quarter as much energy and last many times
longer (usually around 10,000 hours). It is estimated that a CFL pays
for its higher price after about 500 hours of use.
Fluorescent and CFLs last a long time, but when they’re
dead, they have to be properly disposed of. All florescent and CFL
bulbs, do contain a small amount of mercury, which means they definitely
can’t be thrown in the trash. We recycle our Fluorescent and
CFLs to reduce the introduction of mercury into landfills and the
environment.
Since we are located in Florida our office windows
are tinted or have reflective window treatment to help keep out heat
and UV Rays. This still allows natural light to illuminate our offices
which helps in reducing the need for artificial lighting during sunny
days.
In rooms that do not have windows lights are only
on when the room is being used. In keeping lights off we help save
wasted electricity.
Air-conditioned thermostats are set at 76 degrees
(instead of the traditional 72 degrees) and we also use the heat from
our ovens during baking to help heat our facility in the winter instead
of using heat pumps to heat our baking facility and offices. Our Employees
are encouraged and have set their own dress code guidelines to help
facilitate our energy conversation efforts.
All non-essential equipment is only turned on when
in use and completely shut down (and unplugged where applicable) at
the end of each work day. All company computer monitors are put on
standby after 10 min on non use and all computer go into hibernation
after 45 min of non use.
We use brooms and mop buckets in cleaning the production
plant floor and now only give a power washing to the production floor
when necessary instead of wasting water each day in power washing
the entire floor. An estimated 65 gallons of hot water are saved each
day by not power washing.
Toilets in our facility contain a 1 liter bottle to
reduce the amount of water used by each toilet. By filling a used
1 liter soda bottle and placing it in the tank we have effectively
reduced the water used by each flush by 1 liter. We are currently
looking at upgrading our toilets to higher efficiency models.
We support employee carpooling This saves gas, cuts
down on auto emissions, saves time, makes the workplace more productive
and is more fun!
